Really important legal rights and responsibilities attach to the various portions of contracts and it is critical that school district officials understand how to best review contracts to identify and understand the important parts. This session will provide a roadmap for contract review so you do not have to contact legal for review of every single agreement (even though our presenters would not be upset if you did so!) School districts are always looking for coaches, advisors, ticket takers, referees, etc.  Sometimes school board members “volunteer” to perform in these capacities.  Sometimes community members perform in these capacities.  Sometime teachers perform in these capacities. However, the tricky issue is when non-exempt employees employed by the school district in other capacities (e.g., custodian, administrative assistant, paraprofessional, etc.) perform in these capacities.  The issue is whether they are then entitled to overtime and, if so, how is that calculated.  Additionally, when school districts utilize these individuals (school board members, community members, teachers, non-exempt employees), how should the school district formalize the relationship?  This presentation addresses each of these issues using real circumstances.

Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is essential in lessening a host of poor outcomes for living beings on our planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2018 report finds that accomplishing this objective will require “rapid and far-reaching” transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities. Global net human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) need to fall by about 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching ‘net zero’ around 2050 for the best possible outcome.  Learn how the Oregon School District built the first next zero school in Wisconsin. A building that is currently the 5th largest verified Netzero educational building in North America (the four others all being in Myrtle Beach South Carolina).    Becoming more sustainable or tackling energy efficiency projects can be a daunting task for any district.  Come listen about what inspired the building of Forest Edge Elementary School.  Hear about the different technologies that power, heat and cool the building and the sustainability and student learning goals of the district. Learn about what we all should be considering as we build new buildings and retrofit older ones.  Discover a quick and inexpensive real time strategy to bring increased awareness to your building’s energy consumption. The same strategy that helped to inspire Forest Edge.  Understand that we will all be hearing more and more from our students on this subject as they care deeply about the world we will be leaving them.
