2020 Transportation & Bus Safety Conference ATTENDEE

This training opportunity runs concurrently with the WASBO Facilities Management Conference, and attendees have the option of attending sessions from either conference.


Who Should Attend?

This conference provides professional development for transportation directors, business managers, bus contractors and anyone with school district transportation responsibilities. Network with colleagues, visit the Facilities Management Conference Resource Area, and attend informative sessions covering themes to:
  • Gain an Understanding of how New Technologies for Buses as well as potential plans for implementation.
  • Engage with other Transportation Directors on Emergency Plans for the Bus.
  • Learn from the Hortonville Area School District on how they are using Student Tracking and Electronic Maps for Drivers.
  • Discuss Medical Training for Drivers with nurses from the Sun Prairie Area School District and WI Dept. of Public instruction.
  • Hear from the DPI about Parent Contracts & Accommodating Private Schools.
  • Ask your questions about MAP 21 during an update from the WI Dept. of Transportation.

Training Drivers on Responding to Health Emergencies
Students board the bus with a number of health conditions, from life threatening allergies to seizures. Does your team know how to respond in a medical emergency? Learn best practice recommendations for drivers and see how one district partners with their schools health services team to provide annual training to transportation staff. Information on resources for training will be shared.

Confused by Contracts? Puzzled by Private School Rights?
Janice Zmrazek, the transportation consultant at the DPI and John Strack, Transportation Coordinator for the Racine Unified School District will provide information about all the forms of and reasons for using parent contracts. The presentation will include descriptions of the two types of contracts allowed in law and when each may be used. Requirements and timelines for private schools to get information to the district, and how to determine district eligibility for using contracts for private school students, will also be covered.

Turn the Danger Zone into a Safety Zone - LIVE Demonstration
Simulating real-world school bus stop situations with Smart Safety Solutions, this live demo includes the Predictive Stop Arm (PSA). The PSA is a solution using radar technology and predictive analytics, to monitor oncoming vehicle traffic for probable stop arm violations. The technology helps to further increase safety in the Danger Zone by aiming to notify the bus driver and the students that it may not be safe to cross the street – before an accident occurs.

MAP 21 Update
Wayne Georgeson, Wisconsin DMV CDL Coordinator, will be present to discuss the upcoming changes to Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements set forth by FMCSA, Code of Federal Regulations 380. During the session, ELDT requirements for new drivers and companies wishing to become ELDT training providers will be reviewed and discussed in an informational Q&A format.

The world is becoming a more complex, dangerous place every day and the school bus is no exception. Accidents, active shooters, terrorism, and health emergencies are just some of the things that bus drivers could be dealing with. While we hope these may not happen, is your district prepared to address these situations should they occur? In this session, we will explore the things you should consider when creating an emergency plan for your fleet.
