This presentation aims to demystify the custodial staffing benchmarking process by providing and analyzing new data sourced from reputable industry publications such as Cleaning Maintenance Management Magazine, School and University Magazine, and the recent Cleaning Costs and Frequencies Report. It will guide attendees through the intricacies of evaluating staffing benchmarks, adapting them to suit their specific building requirements, and leveraging data to advocate for additional staffing resources where necessary. By attending our presentation, facility directors will gain a deeper understanding of how to interpret and apply benchmarking data effectively within their departments. Armed with this knowledge, they will be better equipped to make informed decisions that optimize custodial staffing levels, enhance cleaning efficiency, and ultimately elevate the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards of their facilities.

We make individual decisions every day with little effort, but when we ask a team of people to make a decision that they can all support, it can become contentious or end-up as a weak compromise that stakeholders will later question. How do you know you're making a great decision? One that is superior to all the available alternatives? And what if the process to make a big decision took less than 1/2 hour to do, was fun, and would survive the second-guessing of the administration or Board of Education? Brett Remington and Patrick Miller invite you to learn the PACE method of making brilliant decisions as a team quickly and effectively. Everyone participates, and the outcome is clear and defensible. If you decide NOT to participate in this session, you might be making one of those decisions you'll later regret!

Fabrics & Flames: Essential Guidelines for Fire Code Compliance, Cleaning and Handling of Stage Drapery in Schools . Fire Safety on stages is a real issue- drapes are naturally flammable and, when exposed to hot lights, or electrical sparks, there is an increased risk of fire. Flameproofing on drapes form an important part of a school’s fire safety system. This presentation is designed to educate school officials on how to assess the risks and better understand their requirements under the Fire Code as they relate to stage drapery. We review the relevant sections of the Fire Code, and explain facts that school business officials need to know- for example, many engineering consulting firms are specifying drapes in new schools which are not in compliance with the fire code. We review the different types of fabrics and flame retardant treatments available which do comply. In addition, we share practical knowledge from the field sharing little-known facts such as flame retardant wears off over time, will be washed out if the drapes become wet, and how to make drapery compliant with the fire code without incurring the significant cost of replacement.

How to Design Outdoor Play & Fitness Sites to Promote Public Health & Equity. Play is an essential human activity across the lifespan. Play and playful fitness has proven benefits for our health, wellbeing, and our cognition. However, healthy play and fitness experiences do not happen on their own, they require thoughtful and intentional design, in an environment that ignites social connections, and with materials that are sustainable and of superior quality. In order to motivate people to play actively and for longer times we must begin with design principles that are directly linked to increasing motivation, attention, and enjoyment. This must be accomplished with material choices that help to preserve the ecosystem, and provide lasting value through durability. In this session we share specific insights on how to enhance active outdoor play and fitness spaces based on the characteristics of play and universal design. We will share specific examples of play equipment, materials, and design layouts linked to research on how children play, how people of all ages and abilities stay fit, and sites that have proven appeal and lasting value to promote public health and equity.

Staffing Analytics Technologies have been in the marketplace for 24 years and are database software programs. These prevalent technologies help organizations understand staffing requirements for Custodial Operations. These technologies focus on a building’s architecture, employees, current and future cleaning tools and equipment and are with correlated industry standards of ISSA, APPA and NCES. Staffing Analytics Technologies identifies a building’s square feet, floor types, room fixtures, staffing, Other Responsibilities and your cleaning tools and equipment. Once a database has been constructed, it can offer insights and strengthen how you manage Custodial Operations to include: • Improved decision-making utilizing data and analytics rather than opinion and assumptions. • Understand the correlation of staffing loads to Human Resource (HR) Costs Risks. • Increase trust across all levels of your organization from front line staff to upper-level management because of the clarity provided by data and analytics. • Understand staffing levels and staffing loads by Enterprise, Building Level, Shift Level and Work Assignment Levels. • Support new construction, additions and remodeling with accurate projections of required FTEs. • Support the addition of new cleaning tools and equipment technologies based on productivity data and analytics. • Move your management of Custodial Operations to an objective view rather than a subjective view with the use of industry standards.
