Managing a school facility is a crucial role that requires a great deal of responsibility for a wide variety of duties. Facility managers face a range of challenges, from limited capital and operational funds to a stockpile of deferred maintenance projects. This position requires facility managers to have industry insight, mechanical expertise, and business savvy to ensure building occupants are comfortable and safe.     Despite the many hats facility staff wear, they are also perfectly positioned to capture significant energy savings by taking advantage of energy efficiency opportunities. Join Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency program, as our expert Energy Advisors educate attendees on how to take advantage of upgrades, tune-ups, and audit opportunities to ensure control of your energy systems across multiple buildings. Learn firsthand how a Wisconsin school district incorporated these same control strategies to save thousands of dollars.

Air in a hydronic system fluid inhibits heat transfer, collects in the piping or equipment, and restricts flow, actually making equipment run longer than necessary while causing damage to it at the same time.  The air can lead to corrosion & system particulate which collects in the piping or equipment restricting flow and causing other problems.  By eliminating the insulating effects of the air and harmful effects of dirt, hydronic systems can then achieve peak thermal distribution efficiencies.   This presentation discusses these issues in detail including why they occur and how to solve them vs traditional methods. It also includes a test of a common specified air separator as well as an energy model showing payback potential.

Your presenters will help you determine the proper staffing levels for your school district. You will receive examples of cleaning questions to determine the proper level of cleaning for your school district; these questions can be modified to fit your districts’ needs and usage.  Attendees will also receive spreadsheets that you can use to collect your data and input. These sheets will calculate your cleaning time to help you determine if you are overstaffed or understaffed.

It is estimated that a 189 million school days are lost per year because of illnesses spread by a lack of proper hand hygiene in schools. This equates to an average of 4.5 days per year that each student will miss and an average of 5.3 days per year that a teacher will miss. Chronic absenteeism for both students and teachers leads to high dropout rates and huge costs for school districts. Potentially, a great number of school days could be reduced if students washed their hands regularly and properly. Studies have proven that hand washing is the best way to prevent spread of germs. Learn how implementing a hand hygiene program in your schools can help keep students and teachers safe and save your school money.

Moisture management is a big, expensive issue, and it effects everyone involved in interiors - from architects & designers to general contractors & facility maintenance, across renovation and new construction. Whether it's a ruined installation or the unsightly appearance of mold & mildew, the problems caused by moisture cannot be ignored. With cost estimates as high as one billion dollars, they're also incredibly expensive. The presenter will demystify what’s going on beneath the flooring and offer some valuable solutions to save money, reduce risk and improve occupant well-being. Learn why the trend in moisture related flooring issues exist, break down scientifically what is happening beneath your flooring, and how to cut through the noise of solutions to identify some key steps you can take on your next flooring project to ensure success.

There are currently over 408,000 LED lighting products on the approved DLC list!  How do you determine which products are best for your application when everyone claims "my product lasts forever, will replace your existing fixture and provide more light, and consume almost nothing in energy.”  What is Important: 5 or 10 year warranty, higher lumens per watt, low total harmonic distortion, 50,000 or 100,000 hours life, add on or integrated controls, name brands or companies you've never heard of?  All of these issues affect the performance, cost, and value you get by choosing the right or wrong product.  We will explore how these metrics are established, how to compare them objectively, and discuss some myths about LED lighting.  The goal of this session is to help attendees be better educated buyers and understand the "lighting lingo" that is bantered about in the industry.  We will demystify this technology and cut through the marketing hype to provide objective facts on what LED lighting can provide for your facilities and what to consider for good, long term performance.

Public education is a service industry and everyone in your community is a customer. We serve students, parents, community members, other employees,  the media, business leaders, and many others. It is not always apparent to custodians  and maintenance employees, even managers or supervisors, that theirs is a customer-service  oriented position and that they are public relations ambassadors for their school district. This session will cover the essential of good customer service and help you develop the framework of a training session that you can implement in your district using  specific training session examples from other school districts.

Drawing on technical examples, lessons learned and best practices from a recently completed 20 energy optimization projects, this presentation will comprehensively explore and explain the challenges and key components necessary to execute successful retro-commissioning (RCx) projects. RCx case-studies and finding will be discussed. The presentation will also discuss the financial incentives available that can make your projects low cost or even no cost.   Executing projects within this domain is particularly significant, as they ultimately will impact building occupant's health as well as their ability to perform. For example, studies have shown increased indoor air quality has been attributed to a decreased amount of sick days.   Through this process of RCx, it is ensured that building systems are designed, installed, functionally tested, and capable of being operated and maintained in conformance with the current facility requirements. That is, the building will function per the occpants/owner’s expectations. Regardless of the cause of degraded performance, RCx ensures that anemic areas of system performance are identified and quantified such that corrective actions to bring the system back to its most optimal state are identified.  This is done through a prudent engineering process whereby existing systems are assessed and tested to determine the level of conformance with the current facility requirement.    Retro-Commissioning main goals and objectives are to:   •    Bring equipment to its optimal operating efficiency   •    Reduce energy demands and cost   •    Reduce complaints   •    Increase occupants’ satisfaction and comfort   •    Increase equipment life   •    Improve indoor environmental quality   •    Reduce staff time spent on emergency call   •    Improve facility operation   •    Decrease your monthly fixed costs   •    Improve yearly equipment budget forecasting   •    Keep project cost effectiveness to less than 3 years simple payback      This track will help you understand the Retro-Commissioning Process in its totality, financial & operational benefits, learn the benefits of Utilizing Incentive Funding, and help determine the expected results of implementing the RCx for your facilities.
