During the school year, it is easier to ensure that adequate supervision is in place, and inspections/repairs are being conducted by your maintenance staff. During the summer months, there is oftentimes no supervision of the playground and inspections are put on hold until school begins again in the Fall. Older children may be playing on the equipment or risk takers may use the equipment in unintended ways – the slide becomes a climbing board or guard rails become walking beams. Summertime is not the time to place your playground safety program on hold. It is important to monitor the equipment and surfacing, making repairs or replacing equipment before an accident occurs. This program will address the twelve-point checklist of the National Recreational and Park Association.
