This proposed bill requires all K-12 schools that receive public funding to test all sources of drinking water, known as potable water, for lead contamination. This proposed regulation is gaining momentum and will likely be pushed through in the near future. This course will look at the current regulatory requirements for testing drinking water, and how they relate to the proposed legislation. A summary of likely requirements for sampling all K-12 schools drinking water will be offered. In addition, a representative from a school district who has conducted water sampling district-wide will share their experience with the testing procedures, lab results and the response to elevated levels that were taken, as well as the best way to communicate the sampling and results. If you are considering pro-active sampling, this course will prepare you.

School districts are in a position to benefit greatly from Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). An EAP can help teachers and other staff deal with bullying, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and other stressful issues they encounter in their day-to-day work, as well as personal challenges at home. Most employers offer an EAP as part of their comprehensive benefits package, but most EAPs go unnoticed and unused. In this session, we’ll take a look at some best practices for promoting your EAP and helping your employees make the most of this benefit.

Understanding the factors that determine your district’s rating is the first step in maintaining, improving or establishing a credit rating. With this knowledge you can identify the potential impacts your district’s decisions could have on its rating. The strength of your district’s credit rating not only impacts the interest cost associated with debt issues, but also serves as an indicator to your community of the financial health of the district. Credit agencies do not just look at credit ratings at the time of a borrowing but also conduct ongoing surveillance of issuers to evaluate their credit health. You will also get answers the common questions such as, “If the District does this will it hurt our credit rating?”, “Which rating agency should the District use?”, “What questions are they going to ask?” and, “Does the District have to answer credit agencies’ surveillance questions even if it is not issuing debt?”

Learn how the Cedarburg School District developed their Long-Range Master Plan (LRMP) to identify and confirm teaching and learning needs to achieve CSD’s vision: to be a premier school district in the country, now and in 5, 10 and 25 years. The LRMP process included a multi-faceted approach to assess the conditions of all the CSD buildings and educational programming to ensure the facilities aligned with current and future curricula. As the youngest CSD students will graduate into the job market of 2031 and beyond, it was imperative to listen to teachers, parents, students, alumni and community to understand their perspectives and thoughts on the evolution of teaching and learning, and how physical learning spaces influence curriculum goals. Our team will share with you the end-product of months of research, community input and strategic planning… all boiled down into a 29-page LRMP that the District’s leadership and community will use as their guide for years to come.

What are the expectations of students, staff, parents and communities when asked what a safe school looks like? How do you balance this with open, collaborative spaces for personalized learning while still affording students and staff protection to shelter in place should a worst-case scenario present itself? These are incredibly challenging questions and the positions held on how educational environments should be designed span the spectrum. Safety and security is never more important than when creating spaces to serve and inspire learners, and while schools are considered some of the safest places for our children, the multitude of school shootings that have plagued U.S. schools have spurred a re-evaluation of security measures being designed into facilities. Please join Verona Area School District Superintendent, Dean Gorrell, and Eppstein Uhen Architect’s (EUA) Senior Design Architect, Chris Michaud, for a thorough analysis of what safety and security looks like for the new, 2,200 student Verona Area High School. This session will address what safety means for this district, concerns the district heard from students, staff and community, and the process and discussions they underwent that shaped not just facility design, but security practices which included exterior and interior security, building access, staff security, drills and protocol, and other practices with the intent of providing a comprehensive safety plan and secure facility.

Compensation is about half of an institution's budget, but are you confident that the pay structure is competitive and equitable? How much is each job worth? Why is it important to know this? Every employer makes base pay and bonus decisions when hiring new employees; they also make adjustments to existing employees’ salaries, sometimes in tandem with performance results. The essential foundation for these decisions is the value of each job. We will walk through the process of salary survey study, and then how to use the data to establish a valid and defensible salary structure. We will discuss the context and methodologies needed to establish meaningful and targeted job values as the basis for making competitive, equitable, legal, cost-effective and motivational compensation decisions, as well as alternative approaches. Learning Objectives: - Is it okay to withhold salary increases from employees who are overpaid? Is so, what is the best way to communicate this? What about pay decreases? - How can one determine how much an individual employee should actually be paid? - What is the best way to determine the competitive market values of jobs, and how that enter into making pay decisions? - Should base pay be linked to performance? If so, how can this be accomplished? - What about cost-of-living inflation? How is that taken into account? - What if there are very limited financial resources for increases?
