Have you wondered why certain rooms are so much colder than others, why certain areas of the building are more prone to ice dams, and why does your HVAC run more on one building over another? All buildings have locations where conditioned air can escape the building, while some buildings are worse than others. This presentation is designed to clarify common locations of building air barrier failings and what can be done about it. Items such as performing diagnostic air barrier testing on existing and new construction structures will be covered along with how to correct the common building defects we see. Some of the equipment that is used to complete an air barrier test along with building repairs will be discussed. Attendees will know if there building warrants testing or repairs of common failings of the air barrier are.

Over the past twelve years the School District of Elmbrook has added air conditioning to over 1.2 million square feet of facilities and increased total space of about 50,000 square feet. During that same period of time utility costs have increase 27.6 %. Absent any energy management efforts this would have resulted in an increased utility bill of approximately $400,000. However, District energy management efforts have resulted in a 2018-19 District electricity bill that was actually $26,000 less than that of 2007-08. Return on Investment calculations will be provided that provide details of implementation focused on: • Lighting • Peak Energy Reduction • “What’s happening at night!” • Controls that integrate all of the above for effective facilities management The presentation will also include a long-term capital planning worksheet for replacement of major HVAC components with estimated useful life and replacement cost of each.

As teaching transforms from traditional teacher guided lesson plans to student-focused activities and project-based learning, classrooms of the past are not meeting the needs of creative teaching methods and modern curriculum. Recognizing the shift in learning preferences, school districts are investing in student success by transforming learning environments into more student-centric spaces that are supportive of collaborative learning. By utilizing 21st Century design practices like innovative technology, collaborative small group areas, auditory-verbal and global learning, and flexible classrooms, schools can ensure that designs better support diverse curriculum and instruction methods, promote life skills, and encourage student engagement.

The Northland Pines School District installed large solar PV systems at High School/Middle School and Eagle River Elementary School in 2017 and is currently evaluating solar at another elementary school. Third party investors were used. This approach enabled the district to install on-site solar without up-front funding from the school district and achieve net cost savings on its overall energy costs beginning in year one. The on-site solar systems are supporting the district’s educational mission with the PV systems serving as a living laboratory. They inspire students and teachers as they learn about energy, environmental impacts including climate change, operating costs, and building management. This presentation describes the Northland Pines School District experience with solar from the perspective of the district from evaluating a solar proposal through early operation and performance evaluation. The presentation also considers the perspective of the firm providing on-site solar options to the district. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on prospects for the Northland Pines schools and other schools in Wisconsin to achieve zero energy. A zero energy school is connected to the electrical grid and produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. Many of the zero energy schools built to date have been constructed at the cost of a conventional design.

For the first time in history, five generations comprise today's workforce. And many of our most experienced workers are retiring. By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans will be 65 years or older, and we're expecting 50% of facility managers to retire in the next decade. Blue-collar positions are notoriously harder to fill than professional positions, leaving operations executives thinking less about their daily operations and more about how to take their facilities departments into the future. One of the biggest changes to today's workforce that isn't going away any time soon is the daily use of technology. Leveraging technology is not only a huge competitive advantage, it's the primary way to future-proof your operations. We'll take an in-depth look at the state of today's workforce with tips to working cross-generationally, and how to utilize technology like computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or other automated software to unlock potential.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. GIS organizes critical information into a spatial database providing facilities managers and staff an interactive mapping environment to visualize and manage their facility assets. GIS provides access to asset locations, maintenance details, building floor plans and additional information determined critical for the operations of a facility. The goal of GIS is to provide facilities managers and staff a spatial database to store and manage information related to the operations of their facilities. Having asset locations and details stored in a centralized GIS, allows managers and staff access to facility information helping them make more informed decisions. This session will demonstrate implementation of GIS with the Appleton Area School District (AASD). AASD is at the beginning stages of implementing GIS into workflows which support facilities management and operations within their organization. AASD is utilizing ESRI's ArcGIS On-Line (AGOL) technology to support their GIS needs. This session will highlight the benefits of using GIS along with the lessons learned for integrating a "new" technology into existing workflows. We will also discuss the future vision for utilizing GIS at AASD and demonstrate GIS applications for facilities management.

When it comes to school facilities, students aren’t the only ones put to the test. Building and ground professionals must be up-to-date on regulatory codes, testing requirements, and compliance. Lance Gregorich, CESA 10’s Environmental Health and Safety Manager, will walk attendees through the ins and outs of radon testing, lead testing, and how to safely integrate STEAM into the curriculum. Participants will walk away with an in-depth knowledge of new regulations, how to test for these harmful substances, and mitigation steps to take to offset risks.

A healthy environment is imperative to maintaining academic excellence in today’s school system. Unfortunately, given the funding challenges most K-12 facilities face, they can be unprepared to provide adequate lighting, air quality, and even structural conditions necessary for students and staff to thrive. Even when performing routine maintenance, school building and grounds are still deteriorating. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average public school building in the U.S. is over 60 years old. With the majority of school districts going to referendum each year to acquire the funding necessary to address outdated facility issues, they are in the perfect position to enhance the energy efficiency strategy of their buildings. Join FOCUS ON ENERGY®, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency program, as our expert Energy Advisors educate attendees on how to maximize their energy savings and return on investment while in the referendum planning phase for their districts. Learn firsthand how the School District of Superior collaborated with Focus on Energy to achieve substantial energy savings after passing its referendum in 2016 to upgrade facilities throughout the district.
